More Than a Mountain

Recently, I visited Monte Galiñeiro, a rocky mountain situated between Vigo and Gondomar in Galicia, Spain.

Standing at 711 metres (2,333 ft), it offered far more than a scenic walk. What followed was a demanding four-hour hike, climb and bouldering experience that tested me physically but also reminded me of the strength found in friendship, conversation and shared challenge.

I was joined by two good friends - my brothers, Chris and Gary. From the moment we set off, the three of us talked. We passed through underground drainage tunnels stretching for around 100 metres, walked through dense forest, and climbed increasingly steep inclines as the route continued upwards. Along the way, we encountered mountain goats and other wildlife. The landscape changed constantly, moving from enclosed forest paths to exposed, rocky terrain.

As we approached the upper section of the mountain, the route became far more demanding. This was no longer simply hiking. We had reached the boulders beneath the summit and had to navigate precarious rock faces, gaps between rocks, loose boulders and unstable ground. There were sections covered in thorny undergrowth and thick overgrowth, forcing us to choose our footing carefully and work out the safest route forward.

It required concentration, balance and physical effort. At times, my abilities were genuinely pushed to the test. But we kept climbing. Eventually, we reached the peak. For a short while, we stopped, rested and took in the view. After the physical effort of reaching the summit, there was something powerful about standing together at the top and looking out across the surrounding landscape. It was not a long rest but it did not need to be. We had reached the point we had been working towards and we had reached it together.

From the summit, we descended down the back of the mountain before following a long looping route that eventually brought us back to the car. Throughout the entire four-hour journey and during our time at the peak, the three of us remained engrossed in conversation. We spoke deeply about many different things, laughed often and stopped occasionally for a drink of water.

Although the hike was physically demanding, the time passed quickly. That was not because the route was easy. It was anything but easy. It passed quickly because of the connection between us.

When you are walking alongside people you trust, conversation can flow naturally. There is no pressure to force it and no need to watch the clock. The movement, the landscape and the shared experience create space for honesty. You talk while climbing. You laugh while struggling. You stop, breathe and then continue together. The mountain tested our bodies but the friendship carried us through the experience.

By the time we returned to the car, we had completed far more than a hike. We had climbed, scrambled, navigated difficult ground and reached the summit of Monte Galiñeiro. But the lasting memory will not only be the mountain or the view from the top. It will be the conversation, the laughter and the experience of spending those hours alongside two men I am proud to call my brothers.

Nature calms. Brotherhood strengthens.
